Financials: How - And When - We Reached the Bottom

I loved your list of positive economic comments from 1929 & 1930. But does everyone realize that almost 90% of the comments on this page are negative on the economy's direction. Now, that, if it extends to investors as a whole, has to have had an impact on the stock market right now.

Good article and good points by DSB. I do however agree more with Tom. DSB, by the time your 5 points have occurred we'll be past the bottom of the economy but we'll be LONG past the bottom of the market. Of course the level of risk is high right now, but the return potential is pretty high too. My vote is that the market is way ahead of the economy right now and the long term values are just too good to pass up.

Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week. Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."
