Microsoft vs. Open Source: Differences Explained by the Real World
A positive effect of Open source is MSFT almost gives away office pro software to markets that would be very hyper-sensitive to price like college students. They also give away developer and server software to student-developers under their dreamsparks program
There are hyper-sensitive managers also. Eventually the learning curve costs replaces purchase savings, and no peer managers follow the self- appointment open source advocate manager. MSFT still is the winner.

code for "not Microsoft" although the concept of “open standards” is absurd.
I would like to know what is absurd about open standards. I have not read this perspective before. I suppose it means, IT that gives a company an advantage will not be from open source, as it cannot give any single company an advantage. The competitive advantage is what every company is looking for or paying for.

This description supports the concept of services + software. Microsoft just won.

Why don't you talk about how the Chevy Chevette is going to eliminate the Corvette because a Chevy Chevette has four wheels, a steering wheel and can go over 55 miles per hour. Or maybe how the Ford Granada will replace the Mercedes Benz because both are a greyish color.

Will Microsoft Peak in the Next Few Years?
Every 5 years the experts predict MSFT has peaked and the platitudes come flying out from every corner. MSFT is the only company with money and experience controlling anything as large as MSFT controls.

Why is Microsoft Tepid in Its March to Cloud Computing?
Why swap out software (with a 60 percent margin) for services (with a 15 percent margin) faster than slower?

If MSFT can write an operating system that commands a 60% margin, why can't they write a cloud operating system that commands the same margin? Both are software and both are in a hyper competitive market. The muscles supporting the cloud, a PC network, or a PC are different, but at the core it is software and MSFT could create a strong market position in them all. They've done it before.

Can Microsoft Catch Up with Cloud Computing?
i see your point. I would add that 'cloud' computing is what everyone is talking about, so MSFT had to respond to all those conversations. It also could reflect the enthusiasm inside the company about the project. They'll also get a lot of feedback whilch is what MSFT wants. There is also the phrase that it always takes MSFT three versions to get it right.

Ballmer Needs to Live Up to the Hype
Ballmer has done a great job generating a better income statement and balance sheet. That is not reflected in the share price because the P/E ratio has collasped. He was able to do this great job while not getting the free ride of a skyrocketing stock price to keep morale high that the previous mgmt had working for them.

Microsoft, Sun Do Well in Open Source Census
How is it determined if the software was installed but not used. That is, I have software on my PC that I installed in order to try out the software and decided it was not for me. I didn't bother deleting it. This would be more common if the network admin installed the software and I couldn't delete the software even if I wanted to delete it.

Open Source Bloggers Don't Let the Facts Confuse Them When Attacking Microsoft
Open Source has come to be known as 'free' because it is thought of as being developed by a community that shares all progress with the community. It all sounds like a beatles song. I have read that MSFT would rather foster a strong online community for the developers that they sell to because that is the positive effect of open source.

Running the Numbers: A Five-Minute Valuation of Microsoft
MSFT is held down due to the pie-in-the-sky threats like Open Source software replacing MSFT's development products, Browsers replacing the operating system, GOOG's office software replacing MSFT's Office software, etc. These scenarios will never come to pass, but the weight of hope and fear these scenarios will happen is the wet blanket on MSFT's stock price.
