Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

JPMorgan: Expect Fed to Cut to 0% in January
Deflation = decrease in money supply. Well folks, that ain't happenin'.
Throwing in the Towel on This Market?
You could always write a call or buy a put to protect the downside.

D-Day: Does Deflation Draw Near?
Attention Gold Bugs: Hyperinflation or Deflation?
DEFLATION is a monetary phenomenon. If the money supply contracts, there is deflation. DELEVERAGING is a market phenomenon. If there are more sellers than buyers of stock, the price of the stock goes down, e.g. GE, Citigroup, Eastman KodaK, Intel.
Besides that, the "deflationroom&qu... is getting awfully crowded with bears. Time to take the contrarian position?

First it was: "invest in commodities", but a few months later RJI crashed.
Then it was: "invest in China", and a few months later the Hang-Seng crashed.
Tug of War Between Deflation and Inflation
Your "Detroit" is a perfect example of supply and demand. Because the big 3 car makers in Detroit are so stupid to make cars that nobody wants, the're going out of business and lay off people.
I suggest you get a job at the Toyota plant. They know how to make cars that sell.
Tug of War Between Deflation and Inflation
Prices of commodities come down because of supply and demand. Has nothing to do with "deflation".

Real Price of Gold Soars
In deflation bond prices outpace money. However, this time around bond prices have collapsed against gold. Shows you we have actually have hyperinflation.
Regardless what story you buy these days, buy physical gold. Close your brokerage account, 401K and IRAs, and BUY GOLD.
Dissonance in the Markets
b) ...because money printing is proping them up.
c) ...therefore, the 2 year German govvys are lower on the day.because the bondmarket suspect that in the coming years hyperinflation will be le jeu du jour.
d) ....but in the short term there are still credit problems and thus EMFX is trading in a risk averse fashion.
e) ...Additionally, the euro is declining vis-avis the dollar because the mess in the US might be less than the mess in Euroland.
